An
indispensable natural resource: water
Water
is the essential component of all living things and of man in particular. It
is, moreover, an essential resource for most of its activities.
Water
covers three quarters of the Earth's surface, but only a small part is
available and man-made. In addition, water resources that can be used by humans
are now threatened with scarcity and exposed to multiple pollutions. It is
therefore essential to preserve and manage this indispensable natural resource
in the long term.
1.
How is water essential for humans?
•
Water is an essential element to any form of life: it moisturizes and conveys
the essential elements for cellular activities. An adult man is thus made up of
65% of water, which he has to constantly renew to compensate for daily losses
due to perspiration, urine, etc.
•
In addition, man uses water for domestic purposes, for his agricultural
activities, including irrigation, and for most of his industrial activities.
2.
What water resources can be used by humans?
•
On the surface of the Earth, water is distributed in different reservoirs.
Saltwater from the oceans and seas accounts for over 97% of the water on the
Earth's surface, freshwater less than 3%. The majority of this freshwater is
trapped as ice in ice caps and glaciers. On the continents, liquid freshwater
is found in lakes, rivers and groundwater. Finally, water is present in very
small quantities, in the form of water vapor, in the atmosphere and the
biosphere.
•
Water covers three-quarters of the planet's surface. However, the only reserve
that is truly available and manageable is fresh water from rivers and
groundwater. This stock represents only one hundredth of the total volume of
fresh water. However, depending on the climate, geological structure, demography,
etc., this resource is more or less available and easy to access.
