The case of the Arab and Arab-Muslim world

This case is particularly interesting in that, because of latitude and geographical and climatic conditions, which are often arid, in most of the countries concerned, water occupies an even more important place than elsewhere in all fields, especially in their forms of culture and civilization. It is in fact a very large group where we can differentiate geographic, ethnic, historical and cultural realities that fit into each other in three concentric circles. The central circle extends from north to south from the Taurus Mountains to the Persian Gulf, and from west to east, from the eastern Mediterranean to the Iranian plateau, without Iran or Anatolia. It should be noted that this is an arid region, or even desert, where water is more important than land. Around this first circle, there is a second, much larger, which extends to the west, from Egypt to Morocco included: this is the same civilization, impregnated by a common culture, linked to the spread of the Arabic language that prevailed in the early days of Islam; a bit like Latinized Gaul in the Roman Empire, which gradually gave birth to French culture from the Gallo-Roman civilization. We can once again note the arid and sometimes desert climate of countries considered where water is scarce, desired, coveted. The third circle is centered on the Arabian Peninsula and extends for thousands of kilometers in all directions where Islam has spread over five continents. Arabic being sacred language, the holy cities being in the Middle East and the pilgrimage to Mecca being one of the religious obligations, every Muslim of this third set has the gaze turned towards the Arab world of the two previous circles whose movements reverberate in chain. The Arab world has, since its origins, played a considerable role: has it not transmitted to Europe still feudal a large part of the knowledge of antiquity, both Aristotelian philosophy and medicine Hippocrates, paving the way for the Renaissance? This part of the world, where very rich populations rub shoulders with masses, urban or rural, very poor, still plays an essential role, particularly because of its demographic dynamism, the presence on its soil of considerable energy resources and major conflicts, real or potential, for the sharing of water resources that are both limited and very unevenly distributed. But this same region is also strongly solicited by opposing currents and strongly opposing influences: some in favor of ancestral traditions, others in the direction of openness and modernity
